What does AKAYA mean?

AKAYA originates from the combination of two adinkra symbols; symbols from Ghana that represent important concepts/aphorisms based on traditional wisdom, aspects of life or the environment.

AKOMA - Heart - She exudes characteristics of love, health, unity, patience and goodwill.

AYA - Endurance and Resourcefulness - She has endured many adversities and outlasted much difficulty.

Why does AKAYA exist?

Globally, women are facing unbearable disparities; deeply rooted gender inequalities in educational, economic, political and social spheres still exist. Despite progress, our girls are still bearing the brunt of it all and are somehow the ones who remain left behind.

The Harsh Reality:
  • Worldwide, 129 million girls are out of school.

  • 1 in 3 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa lack basic educational access, whilst only 20% of the girls in Sub-Saharan Africa complete upper-secondary school.

  • The safety, hygiene or sanitation needs of girls in some places are still not being met with at least 500 million women worldwide not having access to the facilities and resources they need to manage their periods. Thus having a significant impact on their pursuit of education (1 in 10 girls miss 20% of the school year in sub-Saharan Africa) and health (e.g. STIs).

What happens when we overcome these barriers?

With that being said, we know that it is vital to tackle and eliminate these barriers that unfortunately exist for our women and girls, especially across Africa. This is why AKAYA exists. AKAYA is BY the African Woman, FOR the next generation of African Women.

"When women thrive, all of society benefits, and succeeding generations are given a better start in life.

- Kofi Annan
