AKAYA Foundation Launches First UK Programme!

Dr Khadija Owusu

The AKAYA Wellness Initiative Applications Open to Empower Young Black Women in the UK

The AKAYA Foundation is proud to announce the launch of its first UK-based programme, the AKAYA Wellness Initiative, a transformative 6-month programme aimed at empowering young Black women aged 16-19 in the UK. Supported by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Some of the most significant health and social disparities particularly affect young Black women, who also experience the highest social, emotional, and mental health needs but have the lowest access to healthcare. The AKAYA Wellness Initiative is designed to combat these inequalities through a tailored programme, curated by Black women with lived experiences, for young Black women.

The programme will feature:

A 10-session webinar series, focusing on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, including physical, emotional, financial, and social well-being.

Collaborative group projects, enabling participants to use digital storytelling to design impactful community wellness campaigns.

The AKAYA Wellness Finale, an in-person event celebrating the participants’ growth and showcasing their achievements.

“This initiative is a response to the urgent need to address disparities faced by young Black women,” said Dr Khadija Owusu. “By providing culturally relevant resources, education, and community engagement, we’re empowering these women to take charge of their health, well-being, and futures.”

Why It Matters:

The initiative is expected to directly impact individuals, addressing health disparities that not only affect these women but ripple out to their families and the wider community. By bridging the gap between poverty and thriving, the programme provides participants with the skills and confidence to access healthcare, improve their well-being, and build brighter futures.
